Handwritten Thank You Notes in Business are a Must

The office parties are now winding down, and the exchange of cards and gifts will soon be over. Hopefully, the items given to you by business colleagues have been received with delight and appreciation. Of course, there is only one way for the giver to know that and that is by your response.

It is absolutely necessary to acknowledge receipt of a gift. Whether the present was given in person or arrived via a delivery service, every gift should be acknowledged with a written thank you.

Some people think that because the gift has come from a supplier or vendor, it doesn't require any form of thanks. Being the customer is no excuse for bad manners.

It is especially important to send a timely thank you when a gift is delivered by mail or another type of parcel service. Unless you respond, the giver has no way to know that you actually received the item. By taking a few extra minutes to write a note, you are showing appreciation and letting the other person know that the present reached you.

Yes, write the thank you note by hand.

A handwritten note does not take any longer than a phone call or an e-mail response if you keep correspondence cards handy. In fact, depending on your typing skills or how chatty you are, writing your thanks could take less time. However, a handwritten letter gives the appearance of extra effort. So do yourself and the generous person who sent the gift a favor - pick up pen and paper without delay and send a personal note. Think how impressed the sender will be to get your thank you and season's greetings before the holidays are over.

One final word - you may use the Internet to acknowledge receipt of a gift, but follow your e-mail with a written note as soon as possible.
