The enormous Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square is worth a visit with a special ceremony to switch the lights on held at the beginning of December each year. The enormous pine is given as a gift each year from the Norwegian people. This tradition that started in 1947 was a way for the people of Norway to thank Britain for its support during the Second World War. The tree lights are very beautiful and this is a wonderful and free way to get you feeling the festive spirit.
London is literally lit-up with Christmas lights over the festive season and there are various 'switching on' ceremonies throughout the capital from the middle of November. Often a famous person will switch on the lights so these events can be worth checking out if you are a celebrity spotter. The lights are usually centered around some of London's greatest shopping areas like, Covent Garden, Bond Street and Oxford Street. This gives you a great chance to enjoy the Christmas lights whilst also doing your gift shopping. For a more organized view of London's many Christmas lights you can book a guided walking tour many of London's famous landmark buildings are lit up for Christmas and this can be a spectacular sight.
The Christmas Shop is a wonderful experience for all those who love their Christmas shopping. The shop, which is located at London's Hays Galleria is devoted entirely to all things Christmas - all year round. However in November and December this shop comes into it's own and you can buy every kind of decoration, light, nativity scene and garland imaginable to decorate your own home for Christmas.
The Cologne Christmas market at the Southbank Centre is a real treat with all kinds of German gifts, food and crafts available to buy. You will be able to sample some traditional mulled wine or pick up some spicy gingerbread. The centerpiece is a beautiful traditional carousel, which the children will love.
Of course Christmas would not be complete without listening to some traditional Christmas Carols. There are various Carol Concerts held all over the capital with the Royal Albert Hall's Candlelight concert being one of the most famous. There are usually around five Carol Concerts held at the Royal Albert Hall in the run up to Christmas Eve.
