Even if you are not an expert on their pastime, there is someone out there who is. You could call up your local hobby store, or perhaps post a question on an internet forum. Ask them "what is the perfect gift for someone who enjoys "...fill in the blank..."? People love to talk about their hobbies, and I'm sure they would love to help you out.
c) Friends know an awful lot about each other...including what they might like in the form of a gift. While this information may not be on the foremost of their mind, it might be lurking somewhere inside... You just need to "jog their memory" a bit... Come equipped with your own potential ideas, and even some photos or pictures of what you were thinking of getting. You could always cut some pictures out of an old catalog. The key is to use "whatever" to jog their memory, and as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words...
